Breath Before Coin • Character Teaser

The Hinge at Night

Eri, witness-king of Eri-aka, and Eze Ugo, the fire-eagle who teaches him restraint.

He can stand before monsters, doors, and war. The harder lesson is learning when to stop, when to sleep, and when power is only fear wearing a crown.

Eri founded a city on a vow: law in public; love in rooms. He is priest, king, warrior, father, and bearer of a Mark powerful enough to save lives or endanger everything he loves if left ungoverned.

Beside him flies Eze Ugo, ancient phoenix king and war-companion, patient enough to teach and fierce enough to burn the night clean. Together they patrol the borders of Eri-aka, but not every danger waits outside the wall. Some live in sleeplessness, in duty, in dreams, and in the fear that a gift may one day become a weapon.

A king is not measured only by what he can destroy.

The Founder

Eri is the founder of Eri-aka, a city built to make miracle answer to law. His dream is not conquest, but a people who can trade, pray, defend, mourn, and raise children without being swallowed by wonder.

The Gift

Eri carries an unwanted gift that answers danger before he fully welcomes it. At times it feels like mercy; at others, like a door opened too quickly in a crowded room. It can save, shield, mend, and help him reach farther than any ordinary man should, which is why he keeps close to the tools and habits that teach power to wait.

The Fear

Eri fears more than the creatures beyond the wall. He fears the cost of being necessary, the temptation to spend too much of himself when others are in danger, and the quiet hours when duty begins to sound like a command he cannot refuse. His deepest worry is not whether he can protect the city, but whether protection without restraint might one day become another kind of threat.

The Fire Eagle

Eze Ugo is older than Eri-aka and far more than a bird. In war-form he is a living storm in armour; in counsel he is the friend who tells Eri the truth no court would dare speak. Their bond is power, burden, discipline, and trust.

“Hide in the shadow, not under it. Look without reaching. Hear without answering. Refuse praise. Leave the throne. Use the smallest door.”
— Eze Ugo
